Renovation of Tomb House at Historic Edgell Grove Cemetery

FRAMINGHAM – The elected Cemetery Trustees are pleased to announce the commencement of the Edgell Grove Cemetery Tomb House renovation project, which is being funded by the Community Preservation Act (CPA).

This important restoration is set to preserve one of Framingham’s most historically significant landmarks.

The Tomb House, originally built in 1885, was bequeathed to the town by Moses Edgell, a prominent figure in Framingham's history. The building, located along Grove Street and adjacent to the Mausoleum, has served as a vital part of the cemetery’s heritage. However, over the years, the structure has suffered from wear and tear.

The $625,000 renovation project will focus on critical repairs to the roof, gutters, downspouts, and exterior walls, ensuring the building’s preservation for future generations. Work began on March 12, 2025.

Dennis Cardiff, Chair of the Cemetery Trustees, emphasized the importance of the renovation, stating, “The Tomb House is a cornerstone of Edgell Grove Cemetery’s history, and its preservation is a testament to our community’s commitment to honoring our past. Thanks to the support of the Community Preservation Act, we can ensure that this beloved structure remains a lasting part of Framingham’s heritage.”

During construction, residents and visitors to the cemetery should expect to see fencing, equipment, and personnel working around the Tomb House.

The contractors have committed to minimizing disruptions, and will pause work during funeral services to ensure the dignity of these events is maintained. Access to burial sites will not be obstructed.

The construction phase of the project is expected to last until early summer.

The Tomb House, along with the Chapel and Mausoleum, enhances the historical and tranquil ambiance of Edgell Grove Cemetery, which many consider a hidden gem in Framingham. The need for restoration of the Tomb House has been recognized for many years.

Former State Representative Chris Walsh was an early advocate for the project two decades ago, highlighting its cultural importance to the community.

Before the establishment of the Community Preservation Act, funding for such projects was limited. However, the efforts of the Community Preservation Committee (CPC) have made grants like this one possible. The Cemetery Trustees express their gratitude to the CPC members for their foresight in supporting this vital restoration.

The Edgell Grove Cemetery will remain open during its regular hours throughout the renovation.
