City of Framingham to Begin Annual Hydrant Flushing Program September 29
FRAMINGHAM - The City of Framingham’s Water Department will begin its annual Hydrant Flushing Program on Monday, September 29, 2025, as part of its ongoing commitment to providing residents with safe, high-quality drinking water.
The program is expected to continue for approximately four to six weeks, with flushing taking place weekdays between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.
Hydrant flushing is a vital part of the City’s routine water system maintenance.
The process helps improve the performance of the water distribution network and ensures that residents continue to receive clean, reliable water. Work will be conducted in phases across designated areas to minimize potential impacts on water quality and service.
Benefits of Hydrant Flushing
Flushing fire hydrants is one of the most effective methods for maintaining drinking water quality. It helps remove natural sediment buildup in water mains, enhances water flow for firefighting, and ensures the system operates efficiently.
Temporary Impacts and Precautions
During the flushing period, residents may notice temporary reductions in water pressure or slightly discolored water caused by increased levels of dissolved iron. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), this discoloration is not harmful and does not pose a public health risk.
While most residents do not need to take special precautions, facilities such as hospitals, medical centers, and businesses that rely on water for critical operations may wish to closely monitor water quality and pressure during this time.
