Hydrant Flushing Program

The City of Framingham is committed to maintaining high-quality water for all residents. As part of this effort, the Water Division will soon begin its Hydrant Flushing Program. This routine maintenance helps improve the performance of the water system and ensures residents have access to clean, safe drinking water. Please review the important information below.

What is happening?

The City of Framingham’s Water Division will begin its Hydrant Flushing Program on Monday, September 29, 2025, and it will continue for approximately 4 to 6 weeks. Flushing of hydrants in designated areas will occur between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. The program will be conducted in phases to minimize any potential impacts on water quality and service.

What are the benefits of hydrant flushing?

Hydrant flushing is an effective method for improving drinking water quality. It is a critical component of the water utility’s routine distribution system maintenance program.

Are there any short-term impacts from water main flushing?

Hydrant flushing may cause temporary reductions in water pressure and discolored water due to increased levels of dissolved iron. While the discoloration may be unpleasant in appearance, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) states that it does not pose a public health risk. The Water Division will closely monitor water quality and pressure during the flushing process and will make every effort to minimize potential impacts.

Should City of Framingham customers take special precautions?

In general, customers do not need to take special precautions. However, facilities such as hospitals, medical centers, and businesses that rely on water for manufacturing or cleaning processes may wish to closely monitor their water quality and pressure during the flushing period.
