Elevated E Coli Detected at Waushakum; Beach Closed To Swimming
FRAMINGHAM - The water at Waushakum beach is closed effective immediately (July 22) due to a high bacteria count in the water, as detected during routine water quality testing.
The tests revealed elevated levels of E. coli, a bacteria that can be harmful if ingested. As a precautionary measure, the City’s beach will remain closed to swimming until further testing is conducted. Re-testing is scheduled for Wednesday, July 23.
The latest tests confirmed the presence of high E. coli levels, which can lead to a range of waterborne illnesses. E. coli contamination can cause symptoms similar to foodborne illness, including nausea, diarrhea, stomach cramps, and vomiting. Ingesting contaminated water can lead to serious health concerns, especially for young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.
What Visitors Need to Know:
- Do Not Swim or Ingest Water: As a result of the contamination, visitors are strongly advised not to swim, wade, or ingest the lake water until the advisory is lifted.
- Health Risks: E. coli infection can lead to symptoms such as nausea, diarrhea, stomach cramps, and vomiting.
The City’s Parks & Recreation division will have bathhouse attendants at all three City beaches.
Swim lessons are only at Saxonville Beach on Wednesday.
