City of Framingham To Hold 4 Informational Sessions on Its New Community Electricity Program

FRAMINGHAM - The City of Framingham is launching a community electricity program in March of 2025.

To help residents understand the new program, the City of Framingham will hold four informational sessions for residents and small businesses in February.

In line with similar programs throughout the Commonwealth and following state law, Framingham Community Electricity will implement an automatic enrollment model; however, participation will be optional.

The deadline to opt out before automatic enrollment is Wednesday, February 26. However, Framingham electricity customers are also free to try the program and opt out at a later date. There is never any penalty or fee to opt out.”

Accounts receiving Eversource’s Basic Service—those without a private electricity supply contract—will qualify for automatic enrollment in Framingham Community Electricity in March. These accounts will notice the new rate reflected on their electric bill in April.

Framingham Community Electricity received state regulatory approval in September 2024, and with the program’s launch, Framingham joins more than 200 other Massachusetts cities and towns with similar programs, including the nearby communities of Newton, Natick, and Sherborn.

Participants in Framingham Community Electricity will automatically receive 35% of their electricity from new renewable sources in the New England region for a price of 12.818 ¢/kWh, which is lower than the Eversource residential price of 13.241 ¢/kWh that goes into effect on February 1.

However, because Eversource’s prices change seasonally and future prices are unknown, future savings compared with Eversource cannot be guaranteed.

Two additional program options will be available by request. Participants can choose to receive electricity that is 100% from new renewable sources in the New England region (Framingham Green Plus) for 15.418 ¢/kWh or to receive just the minimum amount from renewable sources required by law (Framingham Basic) for 12.588 ¢/kWh.

All Framingham Community Electricity prices are fixed and will not change from March 2025 through March 2027. Eversource remains responsible for delivering electricity to Framingham, addressing power outages, and handling all electricity billing.

The four public information sessions will include one conducted in Spanish and another in Portuguese.

The sessions scheduled are:

  • Public Information Session (Español) – February 5 at 7 p.m. at Fuller Middle School, Cafeteria

  • CANCELLED DUE TO SNOWSTORM - Public Information Session (Portuguese) February 9 at 1 p.m. at the Brazilian American Center (BRACE) in Framingham

  • Public Information Session February 10 at 2 p.m. at the Callahan Center

  • Public Infromation Session February 13 at 7 p.m. at the main Framingham Public Library in the Costin room

Additionally, Shawn Luz, the Sustainability Coordinator for the City of Framingham, will hold drop-in office hours for individuals with last-minute questions. This session is scheduled for Tuesday, February 25, from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Memorial Building in the Ablondi Room, just prior to the opt-in deadline.
