City of Framingham to Begin Annual Hydrant Flushing Program
FRAMINGHAM - The City of Framingham’s Water Division will begin its annual Hydrant Flushing Program on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, with the process expected to continue for approximately four to six weeks.
Residential flushing operations will take place Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. and will be carried out in phases to reduce potential disruptions in water service and maintain water quality.
Business flushing will take place between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.
Hydrant flushing is a vital part of the City’s routine maintenance program and plays a key role in improving drinking water quality. By flushing the system, the Water Division helps remove sediment buildup and ensures optimal flow and pressure throughout the city’s water distribution system.

Temporary Impacts Expected
During flushing, residents and businesses in affected areas may experience temporary water discoloration and reduced water pressure. These effects are due to increased levels of dissolved iron and are not harmful. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), discolored water caused by flushing poses no public health threat, although it may be unappealing in appearance.
The Water Division will monitor water quality and system pressure closely throughout the flushing program to minimize any negative effects.
Precautionary Measures
While no special precautions are necessary for most residents, the City recommends that hospitals, medical facilities, and businesses that rely on water for manufacturing or cleaning monitor their water supply during the flushing period.
