City of Framingham Seeking Applicants for Cemetery Trustee Position

FRAMINGHAM - The City of Framingham is seeking qualified residents to apply to fill a four-year term on the Board of Cemetery Trustees. The vacancy will be posted by the City Clerk in accordance with the Framingham Home Rule Charter, and the notice includes application instructions and deadlines.

The vacancy follows the resignation of Steven Schneider, who was elected to a four-year term as a Cemetery Trustee on November 4, 2025, but declined to be sworn into office and vacated the seat prior to assuming the role due to a conflict of interest.

Under the Framingham Home Rule Charter, the Board of Cemetery Trustees is responsible for the care, management, and control of the City’s cemeteries, including oversight of cemetery operations, maintenance, and related policies, subject to applicable laws and regulations. Trustees serve the public interest by ensuring municipal cemeteries are properly maintained and respectfully administered.

The only qualifications to serve as a Cemetery Trustee is residency in the City of Framingham and a registered voter in the City of Framingham.

Pursuant to Article IV, Section 4 of the Home Rule Charter, the City Clerk will post the vacancy notice on the municipal bulletin board for a period of no fewer than twenty-one (21) days and no more than thirty (30) days.

Applications must be submitted no later than 11:59 p.m. on January 30, 2026 to the City Clerk who will then forward the applications to the remaining Board of Cemetery Trustees and the City Council for consideration on January 30, 2026.

To apply fill out this form by the deadline - https://framinghamma.gov/FormCenter/Citys-Clerk-Forms-41/Framingham-Cemtery-Trustees-Application--195

A joint meeting of the City Council and the Board of Cemetery Trustees will be held within forty-five (45) days following receipt of the applications, on or before Monday, March 16, 2026. This joint meeting may be scheduled during a regularly scheduled City Council meeting or as a special meeting called for this purpose.

A candidate elected by a majority of the combined membership of the City Council and the Board of Cemetery Trustees will be sworn into office and will serve the remainder of the unexpired term.
