Framingham Mayor Advertising For Volunteer City Historian

FRAMINGHAM – The City of Framingham announces that City Historian Frederic Wallace will step down on December 31, 2025, after many years of dedicated service. Wallace served as the longtime Town Historian and, since 2018, as the City’s first official City Historian.

Mayor Charlie Sisitsky thanked Wallace for his commitment to preserving and promoting Framingham’s rich history and wished him well in his retirement from the role.

The City is now seeking applicants for the volunteer, unpaid position of City Historian.

The Historian is appointed by the Mayor for an indefinite term and plays an important role in helping the public understand and appreciate Framingham’s past.

The City Historian supports the community by preserving, promoting, and sharing the City’s history. Responsibilities may include offering historical context at City events and ceremonies; collaborating with the City’s Public Information Officer on historical communications; working with City committees and commissions focused on history and preservation; and partnering with the Framingham History Center, the Veterans Services Department, the Veterans Council, and the Framingham Public Library.

Additional responsibilities include identifying significant historical milestones and anniversaries, conducting research, preparing historical summaries and interpretive materials, and providing guidance to City officials on historical matters.

Preferred qualifications include an interest in local or public history, strong communication and public speaking skills, the ability to collaborate with City staff and community organizations, and research or writing experience.

The time commitment for the position is flexible and may include occasional evening or weekend events.

Residents interested in applying are encouraged to submit a cover letter and résumé.
