City of Framingham Shares Community Feedback Results on Proposed Splash Pad Project at Cushing Memorial Park

FRAMINGHAM - The City of Framingham today, October 28, announced the results of a community survey that gathered public input on the design and features of a proposed new splash pad at Cushing Memorial Park.

The survey, open from August 1 through September 30, 2025, drew 456 responses, reflecting strong resident engagement and enthusiasm for expanding recreational opportunities for families and children across the community.

“Cushing Memorial Park is one of Framingham’s most treasured public spaces, and the addition of a splash pad will make it an even more vibrant destination for families,” said Mayor Charlie Sisitsky. “Our residents made their voices heard loud and clear they want a fun, inclusive, and environmentally responsible play space for children of all ages. We are excited to move forward in creating a feature that enhances community life, supports healthy outdoor recreation, and strengthens the sense of togetherness that makes Framingham special.”

Preferred Splash Pad Features
Residents expressed clear preferences for interactive and family-friendly water play elements:
 • Top Ground-Level Sprays: Spray Bloom (78.9%), Hopping Water (63.8%), and Water Tunnel (53.7%)
 • Top Structural Features: Spray Loop (69.1%), Mushroom (60.7%), and Splashing Animals (58.1%)
 • Interactive Play Elements: Push-button activators and Play-reactive features (each 61%), and Rotating sprays (60.7%)

Design and Accessibility
Nearly half (49.3%) of respondents prefer a natural or organic design incorporating elements inspired by nature, while 35.3% favor a playful or themed design. Though 78.1% said a theme isn’t necessary, aquatic, nature, and animal concepts were most popular among those who offered suggestions.

Most respondents (61%) believe the splash pad should serve all age groups, and 87.5% support creating separate play zones for different ages to enhance safety and enjoyment.

Environmental sustainability also emerged as a common concern, with several residents encouraging the City to explore options for water reuse and conservation in the final design.

“This project is a direct response to what residents have told us they want safe, fun, and accessible outdoor spaces for children and families,” said James Snyder, Parks & Recreation Director. “The survey data gives us valuable insight into what features matter most to our community as we move forward in the planning process.”

Alison Eliot, Deputy Parks & Recreation Director, added, “We’re encouraged by the level of engagement and thoughtful feedback we received. This community input will guide our design team to create a splash pad that reflects Framingham’s values playful and inclusive.”

The next community feedback session will be held on November 20, 2025 at Loring Arena at 6:30 p.m. The public is invited.

Resident Participation
An overwhelming 94.3% of respondents identified as Framingham residents, representing all nine City Council districts. The largest participation came from District 2 (12.7%) and District 7 (12.1%), followed by Districts 4 (10.7%), 1 and 3 (each 9.6%), 6 (9.4%), 9 (8.6%), 5 (8.8%), and 8 (5.5%). Responses reflected strong citywide engagement, particularly from central and south-central neighborhoods.

Family Demographics
The survey confirmed the splash pad would primarily serve families with young children:
 • 46.3% of respondents have toddlers
 • 31.8% have elementary-age children
 • 20.2% have infants
 • Only 4.4% indicated they do not have children

Based on the survey, interest in Framingham’s parks remains high, with 58.3% of respondents visiting City parks weekly and 27.6% visiting monthly. Fewer than 1% said they never use City parks.
