Framingham Flag Returns from Massachusetts State House and Is Donated to Framingham History Center
FRAMINGHAM - Massachusetts State Representative Danielle Gregoire returned the Town of Framingham flag that had been flying at the Massachusetts State House to City of Framingham Mayor Charlie Sisitsky during a brief ceremony held on Friday, September 26, at the Edgell Memorial Library.
Following that presentation, Mayor Sisitsky formally gifted the Town of Framingham flag to the Framingham History Center, where it will be preserved as part of the Center’s historical collection. The City has at least two other Town of Framingham flags in its collection.
The new City of Framingham flag was raised earlier this year at the Massachusetts State House in a ceremony attended by Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll, Senate President Karen Spilka, and Mayor Sisitsky. Representative Gregoire’s office was instrumental in coordinating the logistics for the flag-raising event.
The tradition of displaying municipal flags at the State House dates back to 1990 under then-Governor Michael Dukakis, when flags from all 351 Massachusetts cities and towns were raised in the Great Hall of Flags to celebrate local heritage and identity.
“On behalf of the Framingham History Center, we are deeply grateful for this meaningful gift of the Framingham flag that has flown for thousands to see at our Massachusetts State House in Boston,” said Anna Tucker, Executive Director of the Framingham History Center. “A flag represents identity, belonging, and a literal stitching together of the values that a community holds significant. For the people of Framingham, this flag tells the story of a community that continues to grow, adapt, and carry forward these values.”
Mayor Sisitsky emphasized the significance of ensuring the flag’s story remains part of Framingham’s shared history.
“This flag has flown high above the Massachusetts State House as a symbol of Framingham’s vibrant past, present, and future,” said Mayor Sisitsky. “By entrusting it to the Framingham History Center, we are ensuring that future generations will understand its meaning and the values it represents, pride in our community, respect for our history, and optimism for what’s ahead.”
The old Town of Framingham flag was white with a vibrant colorful Town of Framingham seal.
The new City of Framingham flag has a blue background with a gold City of Framingham seal.
The flag donated to the Framingham History Center was in good shape, but had some water stain on it.
State Representatives Danielle Gregoire, Priscila Sousa, and Kate Donaghue attended Friday’s ceremony and joined Mayor Sisitsky and the Framingham History Center in marking the flag’s return home.
