City of Framingham to Open 300th Anniversary Time Capsule on September 17
FRAMINGHAM - The City of Framingham’s 325th Celebration Committee will host a historic time capsule opening on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, at 6 p.m. in the plaza at the Memorial Building, 150 Concord Street.
On September 17, 2000, the 300th Anniversary Committee, chaired by then-Town Manager George P. King Jr., buried two time capsules. One was set to be opened in 2025, and the second will remain sealed until 2100. Now serving as an at-large City Councilor and member of the 325th Celebration Committee, Councilor King will join Mayor Charlie Sisitsky in opening the 300th capsule and unveiling its contents at the ceremony.
Speakers at the event will include 325th Celebration Committee co-chairs Anna Tucker and Susan Petroni, Mayor Sisitsky, Councilor King, and City Historian Fred Wallace.
The ceremony will also feature performances by the Walsh Pop Choir and musicians from Framingham High School, who are scheduled to perform the “Framingham Song” written for the City’s 275th anniversary celebration.
Following the ceremony, refreshments will be served, and the public will be invited to view the items preserved in the 300th capsule.
Mayor Charlie Sisitsky said, “Opening the 300th Anniversary capsule is not only a celebration of Framingham’s past but also a reminder of the strong and vibrant community we continue to build. I look forward to seeing what was preserved in 2000 and to helping create new memories for future generations.”
In case of rain, the ceremony will be moved indoors to Historic Nevins Hall.
As part of this year’s 325th celebration, the Historical Subcommittee is spearheading the creation of two new time capsules. One will be opened in 2050, marking the City’s 350th anniversary, and the second in 2075, 50 years from now.
“Time capsules are a wonderful way to connect generations,” said Anna Tucker, co-chair of the 325th Celebration Committee. “By looking back at what was important 25 years ago and adding our own mark for the future, we create a bridge between Framingham’s past, present, and future.”
Committee co-chair Susan Petroni added, “This is a chance for our community to both reflect on its history and shape what stories will be told decades from now. I hope everyone will come out to share in this unique moment.”
The 325th Celebration Committee is also inviting the public to help shape history by voting on a “People’s Choice” item to be placed in the 2075 time capsule.
Voting will take place at Framingham FEST on Saturday, October 4, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the historic Framingham Centre Common. The event will feature nearly 100 booths, food trucks, live music, and more, highlighting all things Framingham.
