City of Framingham To Hold 80th Anniversary & Commemoration Ceremony For D-Day Thursday

FRAMINGHAM - The City of Framingham will hold an 80th anniversary & commemoration ceremony for D-Day on Thursday, June 6, 2024, at 6 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Park at 638 Concord Street in Framingham.

The public is invited to attend.

The event was organized by the 7-member Veterans Council, which is appointed by the Mayor.

On June 6, 1944, the invasion of France’s Normandy beaches in by military troops from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and other nations during World War II is now known as D-Day. At that time, France was occupied by the armies of Nazi Germany.

Codenamed Operation Overlord, the amphibious military assault landed approximately 156,000 Allied soldiers on the beaches of Normandy in Northern France. About 4,000 Allied troops were killed by German soldiers defending the beaches.

The invasion involved the landing of tens of thousands of troops on five beaches, making it the largest military naval, air, and land operation ever attempted.

The ceremony is expected to last about 30-minutes said Veteran Council Chair Robert Downing.
