Latest Construction Update
The City has hired JJ Cardosi Inc. to begin essential building improvements, including:
- Securing the windows
- Repairing masonry
- Installing a new roof
These critical upgrades are funded by $6.48 million in ARPA (American Rescue Plan Act) federal funds and mark a significant milestone in revitalizing the 100,000-square-foot building.
Background
In Fall 2023, the City used $3.35 million in ARPA funds to purchase the former Catholic high school. An additional $1.7 million in federal funding was allocated to demolish the former convent on-site to create additional parking.
Mayor Charlie Sisitsky envisions the Community Center as a vibrant hub that honors Framingham’s history while offering a modern space for residents of all ages to connect, learn, and thrive.
"We are not only preserving an important piece of our community’s history, but we are also creating a multi-generational space where residents of all ages can come together to learn, engage, and grow."
— Mayor Charlie Sisitsky
Federal Funding Efforts
To continue progress, the City has applied for:
- $5 million through Congresswoman Katherine Clark’s office for two ADA-compliant elevators – not included in the most recent federal appropriations bill.
- $12 million earmark through Senators Elizabeth Warren and Edward Markey’s offices for Fiscal Year 2025 – currently stalled in committee.
- The City plans to reapply for the $5 million elevator funding and seek approximately $12 million in FY2026earmarks for:
- Energy-efficient HVAC system
- Plumbing and electrical upgrades
- Accessibility improvements
"We are dedicated to ensuring that this building not only meets the needs of our current residents but is also a model for sustainability and accessibility for generations to come."
— Michael Tusino, Chief Operating Officer
Community Engagement
To help shape the future of the Community Center, the City is inviting residents to participate in a Community Needs Survey. The survey will remain open through September 1, 2025.
Survey feedback will be shared with the Mayor’s Community Center Advisory Committee and the project’s architectural team, who is under contract at a cost of $2.8 million, to inform the design of inclusive and impactful spaces.
A new sign is now visible at the site, signaling ongoing renovations and the City’s commitment to creating a space that reflects Framingham’s diverse community.
