Helen Pruyn made history as the first female firefighter hired by the Framingham Fire Department, paving the way for future generations of women in public safety.
Pruyn joined the department on October 31, 1988, marking a significant milestone in Framingham’s history. Throughout her nearly 32-year career, she served with dedication, resilience, and professionalism in various roles, including assignments on Engine 5, Platform 1, Engine 7, and as a Fire Dispatcher.
As an Emergency Medical Technician at the Intermediate level, she played a crucial role in emergency response efforts.
As the first woman in the department, Pruyn faced many challenges, but she met them with determination and a positive attitude. She became a role model, particularly for young girls who saw her in action and were inspired to consider firefighting as a career. Always generous with her time, she actively participated in career days, encouraging the next generation to pursue their dreams in public service.
Upon her retirement on January 4, 2020, after more than three decades of service, the Framingham Firefighters IAFF Local 1652 honored her remarkable contributions. Her legacy remains an inspiration, highlighting the importance of diversity and inclusion in the fire service. Helen Pruyn’s impact on the department and the community will be felt for years to come.
