Ron Burton

Ron Burton was an exceptional athlete, dedicated philanthropist, and community leader whose legacy continues to inspire generations. Born on July 25, 1936, in Springfield, Ohio, he overcame early hardships to become a trailblazing football player and a beloved figure in Framingham, Massachusetts.

Burton made history as the first-ever draft pick of the Boston Patriots (now the New England Patriots) in 1960. A standout running back at Northwestern University, he was known for his speed, agility, and work ethic. He excelled in both college and professional football, playing six seasons for the Patriots in the American Football League (AFL) and finishing his career with 1,294 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns. Though injuries limited his playing time, Burton's impact extended far beyond the field.

After retiring from football, Burton dedicated his life to service, education, and mentorship. Settling in Framingham, he became a pillar of the community, known for his commitment to uplifting young people. In 1985, he founded the Ron Burton Training Village (RBTV) in Hubbardston, Massachusetts, a nonprofit leadership and athletic camp designed to instill discipline, perseverance, and moral character in underserved youth. His motto, "To get something you never had, you have to do something you've never done," reflects the values he instilled in thousands of young men and women.

Burton’s contributions to his community earned him numerous accolades. He was inducted into the Northwestern University Hall of Fame, recognized by the New England Patriots for his service, and received countless honors for his dedication to youth development. Despite his success, he remained humble, emphasizing faith, family, and service.

Ron Burton passed away on September 13, 2003, after a courageous battle with bone cancer. His legacy lives on through the Ron Burton Training Village, which continues to empower young people through education, sports, and character development. In Framingham and beyond, he is remembered not just as a football star, but as a compassionate leader who devoted his life to making a difference.
