Water Quality Testing:
Before the City opens any of its beaches, the Parks & Recreation Department conducts weekly inspections to ensure sanitary and safety conditions, as state regulations require. This includes testing the beach water for bacteria, specifically E. coli.
If a high bacteria level is detected, state regulations require the Parks & Recreation Department to post a sign at the beach to inform the public. It's important to note that bacteria levels can vary significantly in different areas of a pond or lake. A high reading at the designated beach area does not necessarily indicate elevated levels throughout the entire body of water, and the opposite is also true. However, since only the beach area is tested, public postings and potential closures apply solely to that location.
