On Zoom: What Was the Gilded Age and Are We in Another One Now, Presented by Professor Edward T. O’Donnell

Tuesday, May 31, 2022

For ages 55+ -- WHAT WAS THE GILDED AGE AND ARE WE IN ANOTHER ONE NOW? -- Recently a spate of books have been published with the phrase “New Gilded Age.” All examine current social, political, and economic problems in the U.S. with an eye toward the first Gilded Age (1870-1900). That was a period when America experienced astonishing growth in prosperity and industry, but also urban squalor, corruption, exploitation, and an alarming rise in the gap between rich and poor. This program will look at the first Gilded Age and how - out of its turmoil - the U.S. entered a period marked by wide-ranging reform movements. Presenter Edward T. O’Donnell is a history professor at Holy Cross College in Worcester, MA. Call the Callahan Ctr. to register by 5/27: 508-532-5980 ext. 0 This program is supported in part by a grant from the Framingham Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency, and in part by the Friends of Callahan.
