The Edgell Rd. Water Pump Station was constructed in 1950. The station pumps water from the MetroWest Tunnel, owned by the MWRA, to the City Pressure Zone. The distribution piping in the system directs the majority of the flow to the Indian Head storage tank. The average daily flow from the pump station is approximately 2.5 million gallons per day.
An alternative analysis was conducted in 2018. The analysis evaluated whether to rehabilitate the existing station or demolish and rebuild a new station on the site. Given the age of the building and equipment, and the effort required to bring the existing conditions up to code, it was determined that demolition and rebuilding was the best option.
The project design began in Spring 2019 and should take about one year to complete and permit.
A contract was awarded to Hart Engineering Corp. and minor site work was conducted on the site in late 2020. Demolition of the existing building and construction of the new facility will begin in Spring 2021.
